Rules quite often don't have more rationale than themselves. This reminds me of a discussion I had with my English teacher when I was a kid. I asked why "Amn't I ...?" wasn't correct, while "Aren't you... ?" or "Isn't he ...?" were. She said that it wasn't correct, and that was the rule (or the exception of the rule). I couldn't accept that as an answer though, and asked then why the exception. "That's how it is" she said, and changed topic.
