How did “coucou” (with its original “cuckoo” meaning) become a greeting in French? That might explain what @Joubarc said in his comment above. Are you saying what he wrote? |

How did “coucou” (with its original “cuckoo” meaning) become a greeting in French? "Coucou" according to "Le Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française" is: "Oiseau du genre des pies, qui a tiré son nom de son chant." So, it doesn't come from the clocks, but from the bird, which takes its same name from its own verse. |

Traduire « the other side of the coin »? Idioms usually are 90% not possible to be translated literally... It can happen if the languages have similar roots or are close to each other. |

Traduire « the other side of the coin »? Isn't "d'un autre côté" something like "on the other hand"? |

Are there good online resources for the easy translations? That's the main reason why it's not 100% reliable. Everybody can submit a different choice, so both experts and people who might make it wrong on purpose... :D You never know... |

Are there good online resources for the easy translations? Google Translate must be used very wisely, sometimes it translates good, other times completely wrong. |
